Linkin Park

Linkin Park has definitely left its mark in the music industry as they immediately grew to international fame just after their first release, "Hybrid Theory." "They've been ranked No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade chart by Billboard, and the band was recently as the greatest artist of the '00s on a Bracket Madness poll on VH1." (Wikipedia) What made Linkin Park so successful was their blend of nu metal and and rap metal. Eventually they explored other genres and weren't as heavy with their music. I didn't think it was as good as the first two albums, but I still liked to listen to the new music.

I've been listening to Linkin Park since I was probably around seven years old because my mom bought their album "Meteora" and we would listen to it all the time. I didn't listen to much of their other albums until later, then I looked up Hybrid Theory and liked it just as much as Meteora. I still think Meteora is their best album, but my favorite song is "In the End," which was off Hybrid Theory.

There was definitely a big change in musical style on "Minutes to Midnight," but I still liked the album. My friend and I would always listen to "What I've Done" and "Bleed it Out" and play them on Guitar Hero. I didn't think the this album and "A Thousand Suns" were that great, but there were a few catchy songs on them. I liked the album "Living Things" more than the previous two albums, but it still just wasn't the same as the first two albums with the more heavy rock and metal sound mixed with rap.

A couple months ago, the band announced that their sixth album will be called "The Hunting Party," and will be released on June 17. I'm really excited to listen to this album because their vocalist Mike Shinoda stated that the album will be a "90's style of rock record, but not in a sense of the Linkin Park you've heard before." (Wikipedia) They released a new song called "Guilty All the Same," and I can already tell I'm going to like it more than the last few albums they've released. I could definitely hear that "90's rock feel" to it.

The Devil Wears Prada

Forming in 2005, The Devil Wears Prada has become one of the biggest Christian metalcore band and continues to grow more and more. To me, it seems like with all five albums and the one EP they've released, each one just gets better and better. Judging by their older music, such as the albums "Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord" and "Plagues", it didn't seem like they took the band too seriously because of the names of their songs like "Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over" and "You Can't Spell Crap Without "C"." It seemed like they were just trying too be funny, but the songs in my opinion were really good and and had a lot of meaning.

Later in their musical career they seemed to grow more mature as musicians. In 2009, TDWP released their third album entitled "With Roots Above and Branches Below," which has my personal favorite song "Assistant to the Regional Manager" on it. This album was definitely their best so far, having more of a "darker, heavier, and more epic" sound, says vocalist Mike Hranica (Wikipedia). Even though there were a few humorous song titles, the band's musicality really matured and they took a big step with the album. They definitely grew a huge fan base as they played the Vans Warped Tour ans went on multiple headlining tours.

In 2010, they released a five song EP entitled "Zombie," and every song had to do with a zombie apocalypse in some way, due to Hranica's strong interest on the subject (Wikipedia). Like in the song "Escape" it says, "As clumsy as these beast may be, their mass numbers make up for slow speeds," and in "Outnumbered" it says "like vultures of the sick, zombies outnumber the living." In my opinion, I thought this EP was freakin awesome. The band stated that it was the "fastest music they had ever written," and even compared it to Slayer and Hatebreed (Wikipedia). I completely agreed with that. The album was so brutal and fast and it was the first release that didn't have any humorous song titles.

I didn't start to like heavy metal until early 2012, and my friend tried to show me TDWP by getting me to listen to the fourth album "Dead Throne," but I really wasn't into that music at the time and I couldn't stand listening to it. Early 2012, I saw the Mayhem Festival lineup and saw that The Devil Wears Prada was on the bill. I'd only liked a few of the bands on the festival, so I decided to look some of them up, which is also where I discovered Whitechapel, which is now my favorite band. Fortunately when I went to Mayhem, I got to meet The Devil Wears Prada, but I only got to see them perform 2 songs because I was watching Anthrax. I still didn't listen to TDWP a lot, but they were definitely drifting their way into my music library. Now after listening to all their albums from before and getting to like the band more, I really like "Dead Throne" and thought it was their best album yet.

The band's latest album, "8:18", was in my opinion their best album yet. The heavy, yet melodic riffs were a perfect blend and the lyrics had so much meaning. When the album first came out, I became obsessed with it and couldn't stop listening to it. The Devil Wears Prada has became one of my top favorite band now and I listen to them all the time. I've played drums for a few years now, and ever since late last year, I've learned multiple songs by them including, "Born to Lose," and "Assistant to the Regional Manager." They're some of my favorite songs to play and I'm trying to learn even more songs by them.

As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is a metalcore band from San Diego, California, forming as a full band in 2001. Even though all the members are practicing Christians, the band is usually classified as metalcore, not Christian metal (Wikipedia). This is mainly because their lyrics do not focus on Christian themes. The words God or Jesus do not appear in any AILD songs, nor do they specifically invoke Christian doctrine or quote the Bible. Most songs are about spiritual concepts like existential angst or struggle between reason and spirituality (Wikipedia). Over the course of 13 years, the band has released six studio albums, one split album and one compilation album.

Vocalist Tim Lambesis formed As I Lay Dying in 2001, but started as a full band in 2001. The bands debut album "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes," released through Pluto Records, showed a powerful sound from the band, but I don't think the band had fully found its sound on later albums. I thought it was a good album, but didn't even compare to some of their later albums.

After the band went on a tour, they realized they needed another guitarist and a bassist to complete the band. After the contract to Pluto Records expired, the band was signed to Metal Blade Records. In the summer of 2003, the sophomore album "Frail Words Collapse" was released. The album wasn't a really big change to the sound and they didn't really "break the barrier," but it was described by Sherwin Frias as "executed so well and with such precision that no song misses its target." But the band still hadn't really found its distinct sound.

The band's third album was released the summer two years later entitled "Shadows Are Security" and debut at number 1 on the Independent Albums chart. The band started to get more and more popular as the album was described as "one of the strongest releases of 2005." (Wikipedia) In my opinion, this was the album where the band found its personal sound. I think a part of that was because of new guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa, contributing more powerful yet melodic guitar riffs in the music.

The fourth album "An Ocean Between Us" was released in August of 2007 and debut at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. This became the highest charting release for the band. (Wikipedia) The album got very good reviews and it seemed like As I Lay Dying were one if the bands that actually wrote music that they liked themselves, instead music that they thought the fans wanted.

The next album "The Powerless Rise" was released in May of 2010 and received positive feedback with one critic saying fans will be more than satisfied with "The Powerless Rise" as the band's gradual progression and consistency makes this their best album." The band went out on multiple headlining tours to support the album. In late 2011, the band released a compilation album entitled "Decas" to celebrate its ten year anniversary. It included three new songs, a few cover sings of bands such as Judas Priest and Slayer, and a few mixed songs from earlier albums.

The bands sixth full-length album "Awakened" was released in September of 2012. It was given generally good review, but it wasn't "ground breaking for heavy metal music." (Wikipedia) Personally, I thought "Awakened" was their best overall album. It had many melodic and harmonic guitar riffs and had very fast speed and lots of great guitar solos. In May of 2013, Tim Lambesis was arrested for hiring an undercover detective to kill his estranged wife. In early 2014, Lambesis changed his plea from "not guilty" to "guilty" and was sentenced nine years to prison. (Wikipedia) No one was really sure what would happen to the band because of what happened to the front man, but it was recently announced that As I Lay Dying is continuing on without Lambesis with a new unnamed vocalist. I'm glad to see that the band is not breaking up because it would be a lot of wasted musical talent and potential, but I'm sad to see that it won't be with an awesome front man such as Tim Lambesis.

Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold has grown to be one of the largest rock/metal bands in history. They started just while they were in high school out of Long Beach, California, starting out as a metalcore act and evolving into a hard rock/heavy metal band. Over the course of  15 years, the band has released six studio albums, one live/compilation/DVD and 18 singles and has sold over 8 million albums worldwide (Wikipedia).

Avenged Sevenfold's debut album, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" was recorded while they were just in high school and was released by their first label, Good Life Recordings. The album was definitely their heaviest music they've ever written, featuring little clean vocals, chugging guitars, and blistering drums (Wikipedia). Many people that are fans of A7X don't like this album that much because this was their only metalcore album and the band is more know for the sound they have now, but I actually loved this album from start to finish and kind of wish they stuck with this sound just a little longer, but the newer Avenged Sevenfold is what made them become one of my top favorite bands.

Two years after their first album came out, the band released their second album, "Waking the Fallen." The album featured more of a refined and mature sound production (Wikipedia). They definitely started to gain notice very quickly as they played the Vans Warped Tour and recorded their first music video for "Unholy Confessions," which appeared on MTV2's Headbangers Ball. The band's front man M. Shadows started to not scream as much because it hurt his voice, so there were more clean vocals on this record. This was the album were I thought the band started to get their sound, but it wasn't quite there yet.

Soon after the sophomore album was out, Avenged Sevenfold was signed to Warner Bros Records, which was a huge accomplishment. Soon after, the band released "City of Evil," which was the first album for M. Shadows to sing completely clean vocals and not scream at all. He worked with vocal coach Ron Anderson, who had also taught Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden to get a sound that had "grit while still having the tone." (Wikipedia). I think this was definitely the album where Avenged Sevenfold had finally found their sound, mainly because of the vocals and dual guitar parts between Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance, really taking advantage of having two guitars and having harmonizing melodies. The band had a noticeably gained a large fan base as they beat out many talented musicians to win Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards, (Wikipedia), even though they were hardly new anymore.

Avenged Sevenfold's later released their self-titled album, which is my favorite album ever released by them. The band grew bigger and bigger with every album they'd released, with this album debuting at No 4 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 90,000 copies (Wikipedia). The band released multiple music video for songs on the album, and was awarded album of the year at the Kerrang! Awards (Wikipedia). This album was more experimental in ways of style in featured elements of metal, symphonic rock, a little gothic rock, and even a little bit of a country feel.

Two weeks before the band was going to head into the studio to record their fifth album, "Nightmare," the band's drummer "The Rev" had died from an accidental drug overdose. The band almost split apart, but they still entered the studio with former Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy. Even though The Rev wasn't on the album, his vocals and drumming were still featured as the songs "Nightmare" and "Fiction" were previously recorded. Mike Portnoy did not become the replacement for The Rev, but eventually Arin Ilejay (formerly of Confide) started touring with them filling in on drums. The sound on "Nightmare" was much more dark since the death of their drummer. You can definitely tell they were in an angry state as they applied heavy guitar riffs and strong and hateful lyrics.

Eventually the new drummer became a permanent member of the band and became comfortable writing music with them. As they were in the studio recording their next album, M. Shadows stated he would the album to "sound more blues-rock influenced and have a classic rock/metal sound like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin." (Wikipedia). The album "Hail to the King" was released in August of 2013 and was the band's first album to have no contributions from late drummer The Rev. It topped the Billboard 200 chart in the US and in many other countries. I honestly think that the new drummer Arin Ilejay could have done better with the drumming on this album because I've watched him play before and he really is an amazing drummer, and I don't believe he used his full drumming potential on the new album.

Memphis May Fire

Memphis May Fire started out in 2004 as a small local band from Dallas, Texas. It was not until February of 2007 that the band had stabilized and put out their first self-titled EP. Shortly after, the band gathered a local following and caught the attention of president of Trustkill Records, "There is a lot of really exciting, young, dangerous music coming out of Texas right now, and Memphis May Fire are the cream of the crop. Not since Bullet for My Valentine's Hand of Blood have we heard a more compelling set of songs for an EP, where absolutely every song is bone-chillingly perfect, and timeless. These guys are on their way to something huge." In September of that same year, the band had officially signed to Trustkill Records and reissued their EP.

Memphis May Fire had hoped to release their first full length album in the summer of 2008, but during the recording process of the album" (Wikipedia), two of the band members had left, having the rest of the band find a new bassist and vocalist. Cory Elder stepped in as bassist and vocalist Matty Mullins became the new front-man of the band. All that was left to be done for the album was the vocals since all the instrument recording was done before. The first full-length album was released in July, 2009, and they were obviously starting to get popular as they were described as "a new breed of rock n' roll," and started to make music videos and even had a song used for the soundtrack for the movie Saw VI.

With every album thus far, Memphis May Fire continue to gain more energy with every album or EP they put out. In 2010, they released their second EP and continues to attain a greater fan-base. In early 2011, it was announced that the band was signed to Rise Records (a huge rock and metal music label), and that a new album would be due that spring. The Hollow was released that April and introduced a heavier and darker sound for the band. The band grew even bigger as they were announced to play the 2012 Vans Warped Tour.

In early 2012, the band's rhythm guitarist left the band. The only remaining founding member said this was because, "he did not have the right attitude and was not willing to push the band to a positive direction" (Wikipedia). Guitarist Anthony Sepe filled the role of rhythm guitarist and the band's third full-length album was released in June of 2012, while the band was touring on the Vans Warped tour. The album debuted at #16 on the Billboard Charts and continued to grow even bigger.

I've personally been a fan of Memphis May Fire soon after they started because I love to listen to and support local bands. Ever since i had heard them for the first time, I thought they were great artists and musicians and they quickly grew to be one of my favorite bands. They have grown more and more powerful with their music over the years and continue to grow as musicians. They are releasing their next full-length album next month and i can't wait to hear it. They released two songs from it, "No Ordinary Love" and "Sleepless Nights," and I can already tell it is going to be a great album. I had the pleasure of seeing them a few weeks ago on the "Unconditional Tour," named after the new album. They played those two songs from the new album plus many older ones, and they have always been one of my favorites to see live. They put on such a great show and the fans are always crazy for them. This is a New Era of Corruption: Whitechapel

Just like I said on my first post, I would be talking about all kinds of rock and metal, and that brings us to the death metal band, Whitechapel, which is personally one of my favorites. Whitechapel is a six piece band from Knoxville, Tennessee founded in 2006. The band was originally made up of vocalist, Phil Bozeman, guitarists, Ben Savage, Alex Wade, and Brandon Cagle, bassist, Gabe Crisp, and drummer Derek Martin. The band attained its name from the "location in London named Whitechapel, where the infamous Whitechapel murders were committed by Jack the Ripper" (Wikipedia).

In 2007, the band signed to Siege of Amida Records in the UK, and Candlelight Records in North America. Just before the band made its first album, Derek Martin left the band, and drummer Kevin Lane filled in on the drums as a permanent member. The band released its debut full length album, "The Somatic Defilement" on July 31, 2007. "This was the only album to feature guitarist Brandon Cagle, due to a motorcycle accident that left him unable to play his instrument" (Wikipedia). Then Zach Householder came into the band to fill Cagle's spot. Every song on the album was in the first person point of view of Jack the Ripper, describing his slaughter and rape of prostitutes, which ties in to how the band got its name.

Soon after the band's debut album release, it signed over to Metal Blade Records, which is one of the biggest metal record labels in history. On July 8, 2008, the band released its sophomore album, "This Is Exile." The lyrics on this album were more about political and anti-religious themes. The album reached No. 118 in the Billboard Top 200. The band was obviously growing very quickly, as the band toured the 2008 Summer Slaughter Tour, and in August 2008, they began their first ever headlining tour with Impending Doom, A Different Breed of Killer, and Through the Eyes of the Dead (Wikipedia). They soon started touring with more well known bands such as A Parkway Drive and Unearth, and eventually earned a spot on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

The third album by Whitechapel, "A New Era Of Corruption," was released on June 8, 2010. During the first week after the album was released, it had 10,700 copies sold, placing it at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 chart. The name derived from a line in the lyrics of the song "Possession" which appeared on "This Is Exile." Chino Moreno of Deftones did guest vocals on the track "Reprogrammed To Hate" and as did Vincent Bennett of The Acacia Strain on "Murder Sermon." The album generally focuses on negative themes such as the concept of the devolution in society and the increasing corruption in society during the post-9/11 times (Wikipedia).

Towards the end of 2010, Kevin Lane left the band to return to college, and former Knights of the Abyss drummer Benjamin Harclerode joined the band. On November 8, 2011, Whitechapel released the Recorrupted EP, which contained the first music released featuring new drummer Ben Harclerode. It featured one new song entitled "Section 8," a cover song of Pantera's "Strength Beyond Strength." two remixed songs, and an acoustic variation of "End of Flesh."

The fourth full-length album by Whitechapel was self-titled and released on June 19, 2012. The album cover is an image of the Tennessee state flag (hence the band's origin) within the band's trademark saw blade (Wikipedia). The album debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200. The band was put onto Mayhem Festival again and later during January/February of 2013, they co-headlined a tour with Emmure and later co-headlined another tour with Asking Alexandria and Motionless In White. Currently the band is set for a spring release date for its fifth album.

Whitechapel has been one of my top favorite bands for a few years now because I like how technical they can be while also being dynamic and lyrical. They are one of the best bands I have ever seen live and each time I see them they continue to get better and better. Guitarist Alex Wade says, "With every record we strive for something different - we're always going to stay true to what Whitechapel is, but we want to evolve and do something that is fresh and engaging both for ourselves and for the people who support us." (Whitechapel) This is another reason I love this band because no one really likes a band that repetitively puts out the same old thing. People want to hear new and different music, and that's exactly what Whitechapel does.

Metallica- ...And Justice For All

Pretty much everyone has at least heard the name, "Metallica." Starting over thirty years ago, they have become one of the most influential metal bands in history. Metallica have released ten full studio albums and multiple live and compilation albums and last even released a 3D movie.

Personally I think ...And Justice For All was their best album. It was the fourth album released by the band in 1988 and the first album to feature bassist Jason Newsted. The album was very musically progressive and featured long and complex songs, fast tempos, and technical verse-chorus structures. The album's songs' dark lyrics mainly focused on themes of political and legal injustice, as seen through the acts of war, censored speech, and nuclear brinkmanship.

The album cover shows a statue of Lady Justice cracked, blindfolded, and held down by ropes with her breasts exposed and money in both of her scales. The title of the album is written on the cover in graffiti-type writing.

Soon after ...And Justice For All was released, the album immediately started getting great reviews by critics all over the world. In a review for Rolling Stone, Michael Azerrad said Metallica's compositions are impressive and called the album's music "a marvel of precisely channeled aggression." There were very few negative reviews for the album. Eventually, Metallica was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Peformance, but unfortunately lost to Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave. The album became so popular that the band created their first music video for perhaps their most famous song of all time, "One."

...And Justice For All has not been Metallica's most successful album, but it's definitely one of the best in my opinion. Personally, I think in order, Metallica's best albums are:

Welcome to my blog! On here I will be posting about certain bands, albums, and genres of music. It will be mainly focused many different types of rock and metal, all the way from classic rock to heavy metalcore. I personally like most types of rock and metal, and I'll be more directed towards new rock and metal bands, but there will be some posts about older bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. I hope you enjoy this blog!
